What Causes Skin Laxity & How Do You Treat It?

Beautiful Young Woman

Skin Laxity is something we will all experience as we age regardless of how much we work out and eat healthy. For skin to be tight it depends on collagen and elastin, which are two components of the deep layer of the skin called the dermis. Elastin and collagen are found just above the fat layer which lies beneath our skin. As we age we begin to lose these two vital components, so our skin begins to lose elasticity resulting in loose or sagging skin.

Why do we lose collagen and elastin as we age?

Over the years our skin is exposed to high levels of free radicals damaging the skin. This can occur from smoking, over-exposure to the sun and environmental pollutants.

Naturally as part of the aging process our bodies production of collagen and elastin diminishes. In addition, exposing the skin to free radicals can speed up the aging process by destroying the collagen we have.

If we do not consume enough antioxidants to combat free radicals, our skin pays the price. Antioxidants are essential to prevent collagen destruction.

If you have a medical condition which keeps your body from absorbing certain vitamins and minerals, this can result in a deficiency, which can lead to collagen deconstruction. For example, the body depends on Vitamin C when it forms collagen fibers. Without this vitamin, the process is interrupted.

What can be done to combat skin laxity?

As mentioned above, there are many factors which play a role in skin laxity. The most important things we can do to protect our skin are to use sunscreen daily, consume enough antioxidants, avoid yo-yo weight gain and loss, and make sure to get enough Vitamin C and other important vitamins and minerals.

Fortunately, if loose skin, lines/wrinkles, or cellulite are already present, there are now advanced technology treatments available to stimulate collagen production and tighten skin.

ThermiSmooth® is one of the best skin tightening treatments on the market today and happens to be one of the most non-invasive, gentle, and easy. ThermiSmooth® uses radio frequency to deliver heat to the dermis, which stimulates collagen production. When the thermal energy penetrates the underlying tissue, collagen tightens encouraging growth and rejuvenation of the skin.

The BioSpa® Newport Beach recommends four to six sessions, approximately 20 minutes each depending on the size and number of areas being treated, spaced 2-3 three weeks apart. The treatment itself is very comfortable and feels similar to a hot stone massage. Afterwards, the skin may be a little red, but patients can resume their regular daily activities as if nothing ever happened. It may take a few treatments before results are noticeable.

ThermiSmooth® can be used to treat loose skin and cellulite from head to toe.
