Cellulite plagues many women looking for solutions to this unsightly issue. Cellfina, a new approach to tackling cellulite, may just be the answer. The FDA has approved Cellfina to last at least three years with no loss of benefit, which is the longest of any FDA-cleared treatment for cellulite.
How Does Cellfina Work?
According to the Mayo Clinic, cellulite is caused by fibrous bands of connective tissue that are pulled tight, causing dimpling in the skin’s surface. Cellfina uses controlled subcision to break up the fibrous bands and reduce the appearance of cellulite. The proprietary suction applicator draws skin and fat into the applicator, which allows the subcision blade to divide the fibrous bands at either 6 mm or 10 mm below the skin’s surface. The blade, similar in size to a 22-gauge needle, has been compared to a penicillin shot. The procedure doesn’t require stitches, allowing patients to return to their normal, unrestricted activity in a matter of hours.
Cellfina has a short procedure time—ranging from 20 to 60 minutes—and patients often require only a single treatment in order to see up to 2 years of improvement in cellulite. The procedure doesn’t require any pre-treatment, and post-treatment is as simple as wearing something to compress the area, such as yoga pants, and a dressing over the completed area in case of oozing from local anesthetic. Many patients see improvement as soon as 3 days post-procedure.
Is Cellfina Right for Me?
Cellfina is recommended for patients with mild to moderate cellulite. Patients with more severe cellulite may not see the desired results with Cellfina, and may need to explore other options. Cellfina is also not recommended for patients with conditions that can cause bleeding.
