While not usually painful, the appearance of spider veins and larger varicose veins can be very bothersome. Sclerotherapy offers a minimally invasive solution to diminishing veins for long-lasting results.
Patients choose sclerotherapy when they are bothered by the appearance of spider veins in the face or legs or larger varicose veins in the legs. Spider veins and varicose veins can develop for a number of reasons. Spider veins are tiny, web-like veins that can be red or blue in color. The veins are commonly visible on the face and legs. Varicose veins are larger, raised veins commonly found in the legs. Veins are caused by a number of factors including:
- Hormone changes from pregnancy or menopause
- Birth control use
- Occupations involving standing for long periods of time
- A history of blood clots
When sclerotherapy is injected into the vein, the salt solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to become damaged and for the blood to clot. Once this collapse occurs, blood does not run through the vein anymore, and it turns into scar tissue, becoming less visible through the skin.
Sclerotherapy treatment will be tailored to the type of veins you are experiencing and wear. There are several treatment options when it comes to improving the appearance of veins. During your consultation at BioSpa, someone from our team will meet with you to determine if sclerotherapy is right for you and how many injections, and how many treatment sessions you can expect. During each of your treatment sessions with sclerotherapy, the solution will be injected directly into your veins. The process usually takes about 30 minutes. Patients typically require three or four spaced-out sessions for optimal improvement.

- If compression stockings are necessary, wear them as often as possible.
- Get up and moving right away to increase blood flow and speed the healing process.
- Avoid hot saunas, hot tubs, and baths for one week following treatment.
- Avoid air travel and strenuous exercise for one week.
The results of treatment with sclerotherapy will take some time to become noticeable as the vein turns to scar tissue and begins to fade. For smaller spider veins, results will become noticeable in about three to six weeks. Larger varicose veins should respond in three to four months. Once the treated veins respond to treatment, they will not reappear, however, new veins can still appear in the future.
Less than 10% of patients won’t respond to sclerotherapy. Luckily, there are several different options when it comes to successfully treating the appearance of veins. For those who find success with the treatment, future sessions can be performed if new veins appear.
If you’re ready to fade the appearance of your veins, schedule your consultation at BioSpa to find out if sclerotherapy is right for you. Contact our office at (949)347-5656 to make your appointment.
