What Is Laser Skin Rejuvenation?
Laser skin rejuvenation has become a popular, non-surgical treatment method that has provided excellent results for many patients. These treatments typically use cutting-edge laser technology to stimulate tissue regeneration and collagen formation in targeted areas. The result is usually visibly improved texture and tone that can last for months, without the need for surgery.
To enhance your results, it is recommended that you follow detailed instructions from your specialist following treatment.
Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Skin Rejuvenation?
Laser skin rejuvenation is effective for patients with:
- Lighter skin types
- Pigmented freckles
- Brown spots
- Uneven skin texture
- Lines & Wrinkles
- Acne
- Vascular lesions
- Rosacea
- Mild to severe wrinkles
- Acne scarring
- Sun damage spots
What Is Laser Resurfacing?
There are now many new options for patients who are seeking nonsurgical facial rejuvenation. One of the most popular choices is Laser Skin Resurfacing. This can be used to treat facial and body wrinkles, scars, blemishes and acne. Laser allows extreme precision, including very delicate areas, such as eyelids. Newer innovations, such as lasers by Ellipse®, offer various wave lengths to achieve the goals, in this case, laser resurfacing to provide a smoother, healthier, young, beautiful, glowing skin that is luminescent in its appearance. A combination of a fractional type laser treatment and ablative treatment on the surface of the skin can improve the wrinkles and the appearance of the outer surface of the skin, while stimulating the growth of new collagen and elastin fibers in the deeper layers.
BBL Photofacials, also commonly called IPL or intense pulsed-light, can be used to make the skin tone more even in color and texture. The BBL, or broad-band light is Ellipse’s version of this Photo Facial and is an extremely high quality laser made by a company with vast experience in this type of laser equipment. The new fountain of youth for skin care has evolved from studies recently reported from Stanford University showing the changes within the cellular DNA following ongoing treatment with the BBL Photofacial laser that reverses the changes of aging and provides skin cells that are more similar to skin cells of a 20 or 30-year old than the skin cells of a 56 or 70-year-old. These are some of the most exciting findings with regard to skin treatment with this particular wave length laser that has occurred in the last twenty years. There is no down time and there are long lasting results. The treatment can be performed on the face and neck ,as well as the chest, arms and hands and, again, can provide clear, smooth, young-looking skin. Brown spots caused by sun damage, aging, or other forms of ultraviolet light and damaged by smoking can be largely mitigated, leaving the skin luminescent. Initial treatments may be performed at 4-6 week intervals, followed by an ongoing program of maintenance treatment every 4-5 months. This program has shown increased collagen regrowth, tightening of the skin, decreased laxity and improved clarity.
BBL laser light can also address the following skin issues:
- Pigmented freckles and brown (age) spots
- Unwanted hair
- Uneven skin texture
- Acne
- Vascular lesions (small blood vessels or telangiectasias)
- Rosacea
What Are Microlaser Peels (Mlp) And Nano Peels?
A micropeel is a laser peel that reaches midlevel below the epidermis that eliminates wrinkles, and brightens and tightens the skin, improving texture and tone. The skin will appear more youthful making the use make-up less necessary or certainly easier to apply. As a contrast, microdermabrasion generally addresses skin levels 1-2 Microns, a Nano peel 4-10 Microns and micropeel 10-50 Microns.
The Ellipse® multi-level platform allows the depth of the peel to be tailored so that down time can be minimal, such as healing over a weekend or slightly longer.
Many doctors have used these techniques and in turn this has given rise to the means for eyelid peels, such as the Madonna peel or the Hollywood peel. These are usually very light Nano peels or micropeels that will heal within just a few days, thus having very little down time but then are repeated at intervals as short as every two weeks to ultimately obtain the best possible result.
What Are Profractional and Fraxel Laser Treatments?
A profractional treatment is a type of fractional laser treatment that goes deeper into the dermis to not only eliminate wrinkles but to stimulate collagen and elastin which improves the skin tone and texture over time. The improvement can be seen in the first few months and may continue to improve in months 3-6. Combinations of lasers may be used as well, including fraxelated CO2 lasers which generate more heat in the deeper tissues and micropeel on the surface of the skin. The choices of the specific laser packages depend upon the color of the skin, the quality of the skin, and the amount of down time that each patient would prefer to have during the healing period.
Trifecta Laser Packages
The Trifecta involves a combination of laser treatments to get the ultimate best results for your skin. Common treatments may include BBL Photofacials and Micropeel with skin tightening. The skin tightening is an additional component of the BBL treatment that heats the collagen below the surface and causes tightening of the collagen and skin. The end peel causes resurfacing of the epidermis as noted above.
Packages:
- BBL and fractional.
- BBL Microlaser peel and profractional (Trifecta), as this works on three different levels to give your skin its absolute best treatment at the same time.
What is the Best Age for Treatments?
There is no specific age to undergo laser treatment. Young patients can have acne treated with BBL Photofacial. Older patients may have early lines treated with BBL. Facial hair can be treated with BBL and uneven pigment due to aging or sun can be treated and so each decade of age may have their own specific needs and benefits from these laser treatments.
Goals of Laser Skin Resurfacing
The goal of laser skin resurfacing is to remove tired and dead surface of the epidermis and sometimes the dermis leaving the skin more luminescent
- Fine and deep lines or wrinkles around the, face, eyes, forehead and mouth
- Scars from acne or chicken pox
- Sun damaged skin
- Blotchy skin and uneven pigment
- Liver or age spots
- Birth marks
- Enlarged pores
- Excessive hair of the face and neck
- Rosacea
- Active acne
- Broken blood vessels
Imagine waking up to beautiful skin with your first look in the mirror. Smoother, firmer, more even pigment, missing wrinkles around your eyes or hair stubble on your chin or upper lip, smooth luminescent skin.
Thinking about a Consultation?
If you are unhappy with your skin’s appearance consider scheduling a consultation with the BioSpa® for a full assessment and recommendations for a treatment plan. Even though laser resurfacing is not surgery, it is important that a highly trained doctor, nurse or physician assistant perform these treatments to avoid complications and to obtain the best possible results.
When choosing a medical spa, be sure it is overseen with a surgeon on staff. Look for the following:
- Board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
- Membership in the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
- Staff membership in a major local hospital.
- Reputation among other medical professionals.
- How Is The Laser Treatment Performed?
Much like chemical peels, which are provided in our office, there is a wide variety of laser treatments, some of which are noted above. BBL Photofacials are some of the simplest of laser treatments. The eyes will be protected with special glasses against the laser light. The laser hand-piece is held close to your skin and with the sound of each beep you will feel a slight warmth against your skin. At times, with micropeels, the skin is numbed ahead of time. With deeper peels, a sedative or local anesthetic may be used. With the photofacials and lighter peels a cooling element is attached to the laser which gently cools the skin before the laser beam touches, again, providing a numbness to the skin so there is little or no discomfort.
Where Are Laser Treatments Performed?
Laser treatments are performed at the BioSpa® Newport Beach where we have specially-equipped laser treatment rooms. At times, if laser treatments are combined with surgical procedures, the laser may be used in the outpatient surgical facilities that Dr. Horowitz has privileges with. All of the facilities that Dr. Horowitz uses have a team of board certified anesthesiologists, certified nurses, fully licensed operating staff and the facilities themselves are fully accredited and are state-of-the-art.
Preparing For Laser Resurfacing
Lasers, such as the Ellipse® BBL Photofacial laser, require little preparation. We do ask that you stay out of the sun for one to two weeks before treatment and avoid using any products containing a Retinol or Retin-A for 5 days before your appointment. Micropeels and Nano peels likewise require the same basic preparation before their treatments. Patients who are undergoing profractional or fraxelated Erbium or CO2 laser treatments are provided with a list of preoperative care instructions which are usually started at home 2-4 weeks in advance to prepare the skin so that you will have the best possible result with quickest healing.
Post-Treatment Care
No specific care is required for BBl Photofacials. Skin resurfacing lasers, including profractional, Erbium and CO2 fraxel treatments may require mild pain medication, antibiotics and topical care to reduce swelling and diminish discomfort while healing.
A complete set of instructions will be provided at the time of your initial consultation so you are completely aware of what will be required during your healing period.
