What is Hyperpigmentation of the skin?
Hyperpigmentation is a common condition in which patches of skin become darker in color compared to the normal surrounding skin. This darkening occurs when excess melanin (the brown pigment that produces normal skin color) forms deposits in the skin. It can affect the skin of individuals of any age and any race.
Types of Hyperpigmentation
There are different forms of hyperpigmentation, the most common being age or “liver “spots and melasma.
Age Spots
occur due to sun damage and occur in areas most frequently exposed to the skin.
Melasma
is similar in appearance to age spots but are larger areas of darkened skin that are a result of hormonal changes.
Age spots, freckles, or other darkened skin patches may become darker when exposed to the sun. This is because melanin absorbs the energy of the UV rays, resulting in skin tanning, which darkens areas that are already hyperpigmented.
