Tips to Protect Your Skin from the Sun’s Damaging Rays

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, which means now is a great time to learn more about how to protect your skin from the sun. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the world, however, it can also often be prevented by taking the proper skin protection steps. Read on for some tips to protect you and your family from the sun’s damaging rays.

Know Your Sunscreen Basics

When purchasing a sunscreen, be sure that it protects against both UVA and UVB rays, as well as have an SPF of at least 30. Reapply sunscreen every 80 minutes, or more often if you are sweating or swimming. You may also want to consider water-resistant sunscreens if you will be in the water. Sunscreens do expire, so be sure to throw away old products.

Choose Times Wisely

The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 am and 4 pm. During this time, try to stay out of the sun as best you can to protect your skin.

Cover Up

UVB rays can bounce off of water, sand, and concrete, so you shouldn’t just rely on the shade to fully protect you. If you are going to be spending time out in the sun, try wearing a hat to protect your nose, cheeks, and neck. Clothing can also be helpful, and the more skin you cover, the better. Try tightly woven fabrics and wear darker clothing, which will block more rays than lighter ones. You can also sit under an umbrella to protect your skin.
